Preserving Culture Through Sustainable Development

True sustainability is not only about protecting the environment—it is also about empowering communities while preserving their identity. Guided by this vision, Women of Global Change Philippines, together with sustainability advocates including Lovanne Gallo, founder of SWAN (Sustainable World Act Now), introduced the concept of ECOTRIBE, a long-term initiative designed to support the Dumagat Tribe in Calawis, Antipolo.

ECOTRIBE was envisioned as the first phase of a five-year development plan that seeks to balance environmental conservation with community development. Rather than replacing the traditions of the Dumagat people, the project aims to strengthen their way of life by preserving their culture, protecting their natural surroundings, and creating opportunities for future generations. At the heart of the proposal is a Learning and Medical Center inspired by the traditional Bahay Kubo, providing a space where education, healthcare, and community life can flourish.

The proposed development combines renewable energy, education, livelihood, and environmental stewardship into one sustainable ecosystem. Plans include installing solar panels to provide clean energy, establishing a Learning and Medical Center, and introducing Teach Talk, a communication program using walkie-talkies to help teachers and students continue learning during the pandemic and in areas with limited connectivity. The project also envisions an eco-tourism wellness site with campsites, trekking routes, and a yoga park that promotes responsible tourism while celebrating the beauty of the local environment.

Beyond infrastructure, ECOTRIBE emphasizes community empowerment through sustainable livelihoods. Proposed initiatives include EcoBricks training that transforms plastic waste into useful construction materials, a Farming Lounge that teaches sustainable agricultural practices, and an environment-friendly animal shelter built using recycled plastic materials to promote animal welfare and environmental awareness. Together, these programs aim to equip the community with practical skills while encouraging responsible use of natural resources.

For SWAN, ECOTRIBE represents the kind of future we believe in—a future where sustainability protects both people and the planet. By supporting initiatives that preserve indigenous heritage while introducing innovative, environmentally responsible solutions, we continue to champion projects that create lasting social, cultural, and environmental impact through collaboration and compassion.
